Originally they were called "Shakeproof" lock washers. Internal ones certainly give a better appearance to an assembly over external with tabs showing. They are also available for flat head screws, probably no other types are. They are just a couple options out of many for locking threads these days and are good at making really good electrical contact in spite of paint and crud. Gerald J.
