Ray Onstar can work better than a cellphone, perticullarly in marginal areas. The satelite system has no dead areas like a cell phone tower system. It can be slow to connect and can take a couple days to get your number assigned for the first time. It does work hands free, it does not use cell phone networks. Only you can decide if it's worth 17.00 a month but that only covers Onstar services, phone minutes are extra. Their minutes are generally more expensive than cell phones but deals can be had. In my view, the safety and security are worth it, they are always there. Analog does run out in a few years, but I'm not worring about that now.
