Get a couple of old bag type cell phones. Usually can find them for $10-$15. Get the cheapest cell plan you can, say $20 a month and it"ll be at least a year or two before you reach what it would have cost for 2 way radios. Dad for years had a car phone instead of a cell phone because it worked so much better back in the woods. At the lake camp with a cell phone you have to put on waders and go 20" out into the lake to get service. With Dad"s car phone you could sit in the camp. His used a 12v camcorder battery and would give hours of talk time and weeks of standby on a charge.
