I've had two-way radios since 1980. Mostly Johnson, one Motorola, base and mobiles. Home made 70 foot tower, no repeater. Best distance and reception is with UHF- high band. VHF will give less distance. Terrain does influence distance, max we ever talked was almost 40 miles pickup to tower, most usage was within 25 miles. Primary reason to get them was talking between tractors and home, under five miles. Still prefer radios to the cell phone because it's handier to just pick up the mike and talk when unloading on the go, spotting wagons in the field, etc. Now you can find sets cheaply on auctions- make sure you get enough units now, otherwise added units need to be recrystallized (about $100) to match your frequency.
