Hal's comments all make good sense. But the only potential prey I see on the farm now are mice, and some of them are big buisers: when the bushog goes past I often uncover field mice or rats that are about six inches long. There are, however, no groundhogs on the property. The barn mice seem to be controlled by racoons, but they are filthy creatures. I prefer the coyote. One cat lives at the house and shows good survival strategies.

In the absence of livestock this seems to have produced a balance of sorts. If I get ducks or chickens, of course, out will come the rifle at the first ruffled feather, but in the meantime, she is welcome to all the woodchucks and mice she can eat.
