I don`t know if coyotes are smart but they are adaptive to almost any environment. In the late 60`s I worked 2nd shift on the Seattle waterfront and at midnite on the way home up Queen Anne Hill I would often see a coyote lope across the street. Lots of brush and trees gave it the cover it needed right in the heart of the city. Here in N. Idaho they are all around our property and we tolerate them but not around the barn or house.
