You can start at TDC on the compression stroke and set the dist to just open the points. If you had the dist out, you may have to play with it several times to insure you are on the comp stroke and not exh., or remove the valve cover and watch the valves on #1. If you are on the compression stroke, the valves stay closed for 90 degrees of crank rotation. Otherwise the exh immediately opens. Or, you can crank the engine and while cranking slowly rotate the dist hoping you accidentally hit the sweet spot. If you can get it running, turn the dist cw till the engine starts to misfire, then ccw to the same reaction, and set it in the middle. Would be surprised how close that is to the correct value. Mark
