YES it is POSSIBLE to remove the spider gears in a WD without taking the axle housings off and the differential all apart like the service manual says to do. Remove the lift arms, and the rear cover plate. Remove the small (locking) pin that retains the spider gear axis pin (the pin that goes thru the spider gears). Remove the spider gear axis pin. Jack up ONE rear wheel (using a jack under the axle housing) just enough to allow the wheel to turn. Rotate the wheel a very little and SLOWLY to "roll" the spider gears to the opening in the defferential center section and remove the spider gears. Reassemble with new (good) spider gears and axis pin in reverse order. Replace locking pin (you might want to also use loctite) and STAKE IN PLACE. Are your spider gears BAD or do you just have the "early type " with bushings that wear or come loose or get "squashed" out? Getting the locking pin out is the problem. It is not "real" easy but possible and much easier the second time. Using a tapered punch "ground to fit" the locking pin hole, drive it carefully into the hole to "iron out" or "remove" the staked marks that retain the locking pin in the hole. You might also have to use a "Dremmel Tool" with a very small "tapered" stone or "ball" stone (or dental burr) to remove the upset metal from the retaining stake marks. Do not enlarge the hole too much, you will want to retain the pin back in the hole when you are done by STAKING it in again. Then the "TRICK PART". The hole that the retaining pin is in IS DRILLED ALL THE WAY THROUGH, but NOT the SAME DIAMETER. The hole is a smaller diameter at the end of the hole next to the inside of the differential case. Measure the distance from the center section (at the hole location) to the inside of the differential case opening. Cut a piece of rod this length that is SLIGHTLY smaller in diameter than the diameter of the retaining pin hole (at the small diameter end). Also cut some more pieces of the rod the same length and shorter. Now. using a pair of needle nose pliers slip the short length of rod into the small end of the hole and using a screw driver or very small pry bar, pry against the end of the small pin and force the retaining pin out of the hole (a little of the way). Using additional pieces of cut rod, continue forcing the pin out of the hole until you can "carefuly" pull it the rest of the way out with a pair of pliers or vise grips. BE SURE TO REMOVE ALL OF THE PIECES OF ROD FROM THE HOLE and from the differential housing before installing the new (good) parts. Some people will use a "roll" pin to retain the new (good) parts. The only problem with that is that I know of no way to get a roll pin back out of that hole if you ever have to "do it again". It actually takes longer to type this than it takes to get the retaining pin out. Good luck. The second time you do this job it can be very fast.
