Howdy Brian, I ended up not needing to make my own gasket for this job. Talked to Cahall"s after getting home last saturday. One of the gaskets that turned out to be missing was one between the cylinder block and the main case on the R..ouch! The good thing though, was that all of the gaskets were still available if one were to order a complete engine set. Hmmmmm, I wonder why John Deere would do that? Could it have something to do with some boys named Lincoln, Jefferson, Grant, and oh say Mr. Franklin too?? ha ha. Oh well, it was gonna be expensive anyway. I just went ahead and ordered a full set last Saturday evening. Should be picking them up this Saturday. I"ve actually had some work this week helpin a friend get fence built before the tobacco fence program deadline comes round. So, the R has been on hold a bit. Oh yeah, I read your reply on an old post of mine a while back. You mentioned Tuffy"s tractor and whether mine could out pull it. After this overhaul, I think so. I did pull this R back in "03 at the show. But that year Tuffy had to go run the thresher so we didn"t get to face off. I was really lookin forward to it too. I got a feeling that his R needs a similar overhaul. That pulling incident you mentioned, the one where he was tied to the tractor, is one I have on video and laugh everytime I watch. I notice something else though when I watch him pull. There is a lot of blue smoke comin from that stack and that is a sure sign of burnin the oil. He may not be up to par compression-wise. Don"t know. Hopefully this little doctoring up of my R will work wonders. Thanks for the help Brian and God bless. --old fashioned farmer

Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
