I haven't had a squirrel problem, but mockingbirds start pecking holes in the side of mine when they start to turn red. They sell a netting material just for that purpose at places like Walmart, Home Depot, etc. I tried it once and it worked pretty well but was kind of a hassle. Don't know if it would keep squirrels out of not.
