Resistor on a 12v To-20 Ferguson

I have been reading all the comments and suggestions about converting a 6v tractor to a 12v. I was wondering if I use a 12v coil, do I need to use a resistor with this? I have read that you should because of the point voltage and I also read that you don't need it with a 12v coil. Any Suggestions?
