Cub Cadet 1641 PTO problem

I have a 1641 Cub Cadet which is giving trouble when engaging the PTO. For awhile it would draw a great deal of power and make the charge light go on. Now it is blowing the MAIN link fuse as soon as you switch on the PTO. Is it possible to replace the field coil which I think is what is wrong and if so, where can I purchase it? It appears that a new complete unit is $300.00 dollars, and I"ll scrap the tractor for that much. Thanks for your replies. Charlie in Northeast PA
