Some of the older tractors had opposed piston engines, but these aren't seen anymore except in garden tractors, motorcycles and Subarus. Some European engines, in ships, locomotives, tractors and airplanes used pistons meeting in the middle of the cylinder with crankshafts both above and below, geared together. Others just had one crankshaft, but had a pair of connecting rods going down from the upper piston to the lower crankshaft on the outside of the cylinder. And then there's the twin rotor Wankel used in Mazda Rxs.
