Allan, I can't wear those ear muff types for very long before they start to hurt my head. I worked in a sawmill for years and was also in the Field Artillery for about 13 years. To me there's nothing any better than those foam/sponge squeezy type ones. When they get dirty, just grab another pair. They work great and they don't hurt.
I suppose if you REALLY wanted some protection, you could use both.
