Everyone else put in 2 cents, here's my penny.

Backfiring and hard starting generally go to timing or fuel flow. Fairly easy to chek timing as many mentioned. Pull flywheel and if the sheer pin is marked, get a new one.
I believe in this case though, a carburator kit will do wonders. Needle valve off just a little is enough.
