Planter, On a tree that small a single T-post driven in the ground next to the trunk will do nicely. And be All you will need till the tree is 2yrs older. Take the usual precaution to protect the bark from getting skinned up. Tie with pantiy hose or some other soft material. OBTW... Remember your tree is nothing more than a Very Large Potted Plant for the next 2 to 3 yrs!! It needs watering every other day during the summer! Especially when temps bust 95+ and there are windy conditions. A good rule-of-thumb... is stick a long rod, pipe, Shovel,Hoe handle into the edge of the hole you dug for the rootball. If you have mud on the handle then it is wet enough, if not ..water! Remember your yard irrigation system will NOT supply enough water to keep the trees alive in the summer time. The 3 post method will not be needed on a tree this small. Only if the tree is larger (3in diameter at at the 6 in grade line) and sureenough siginificantly taller would you really need to concider stakeing it. To attach the tree to your stake/post....make a wrap or two around the post then around the tree trunk and then a simple square knot will work. Do not let the tree and rootball get loose that will kill a tree faster than anything! Hope this helps. Later, John A.
