Best Older Riding Lawn mower

My 42" scotts (made by John Deere) lawn mower that I bought three years ago stopped working this weekend. The hydrotrans went out on it. It is a true torq model with a JD part number. Cost is $495 for a new one. Since this thing only lasted 3 years I am considering moving to one of the older better made lawn tractors. Could someone provide me with info on what the best used lawn tractor brands and models are? I do not want a zero turn and already have a finish mower for my IH 404 that I use for the big areas. I simply need the lawn tractor for the acre of lawn directly around the house. Thanks in advance!!
