The 11 properties fit on like 1.5 acres. The 1.5 acres sit between one of Pfizer's R&D centers (opened in 2001) and a 90 acre site New London wants for commercial/condo/hotel development to "complement" Pfizer. The **Bulk** of the 90 acres was already public or could've been bought open-market. Yes, you may have had some enclaves of residential property like the 1.5 acres decided today. This land wasn't critical to the project. It wasn't needed for access. It was simply needed because the city decided they could plan what do to with property better than free enterprise could -- hate to say it, but they sure sounds a lot like communism. The city could've and should've moved forward with what land was voluntarily sold and what land they *needed* to condemn for use for roadways and such that would've been retained in public ownership. These parcels of residential development would've seen their boats rise with the tide of the area and either become very $$$ homes or sold out for commercial development for good $$$ as well. These *weren't* blighted, abandoned buildings. But the City wanted it's own plan, it didn't want to see free enterprise work. This whole thing was a giant waste of the City's time & money when they should've just moved on and not let their ego say "But it's our plan and we know best!" (I live about 45 minutes north of there, and I know the area well enough to know this was just an ego thing on the side of the City & Pfizer that these "lowly" houses shouldn't sit next to Pfizer's gleaming R&D center)
