I did a bad thing. I lifted a heavy load on the pallet forks with my Massey 304 Industrial tactor, equipped with a MF 300 loader, and bent one of the forks. That wasn"t the bad thing. The way I straightened the fork was. I lowered the backhoe outriggers and lifted the front of the machine off of a log with the tip of the bent fork. It brought the fork back to shape but bent the ram, about 1/4", on my bucket tilt cylinder. The bend in the ram caused the gland to score the cylinder wall. I didn"t realize all this until after I purchased a new seal kit $100 and dissasembled the leaking cylinder. A new cylinder is $1300 and discontinued (the discontinued part doesn"t matter). Initial estimate for welding and machining is $700. I havn"t had much luck finding used. Here is my plan. I was able to straighten the ram to within a couple of thousanths on a shop press and Ipe blocks. I"d like to try to fill the scored cylinder wall with a product like JB Weld or some kind of metalic epoxy after cleaning with laquer thinner. I thought I"d add some key by running a scribe in the grooves. I thought of making a scraper/squeegee of the proper diameter from a piece of formica on the lathe to spread the epoxy and do the same for a cabinet scraper to shape the hardened epoxy to the cylinder wall. After final cure I plan to lightly hone the cylinder and reassemble. I don"t expect the repair to last forever. I don"t use the tractor daily so a $1000 repair is not warranted. I only hope it will last long enough for me to find a good used cylinder. Any thoughts, suggestions, comments or reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

The farm and the Allis were sold and I have spent a lifetime working on farms throughout the country. I promised myself that one day I would own an Allis. That time event
