Hi Hound, Ahh repair via internet. Hard to do from here but you can get some ideas. Well don't count the first guys out just yet as they have well seen something on the gauges that made them say it was a bad compressor. I've said the same thing then continued on to eliminate all the other possiblity's of the same symptoms before condeming the compressor. If they just said it's a bad compressor without checking air flow, coil cleaness on both evaporator and condensor, filters, fan cfm, then you were correct and need a second opinion. I've even seen a two speed fan where the relay went out hanging the fan motor on slow speed. I've also seen a under rated unit for the cooling load size freeze up. The cooling system has to take a short break when the evaporator pressures drop very low causing the Evap coil to ice. As the ice builds on the coil, ice becomes a insulator thus less cooling takes place and continues to build until no cooling can happen. I've also seen closed dampers or a outside air damper stuck open causing the same problem. Then's there's the really rear problems of the metering valve being plugged or the compressor valves broken or a bad compressor pump. I've also seen the wrong refrigerant installed. The guys have already covered the most common basics and I touched on some of the not so common issues but without seeing the unit first hand, it's just a internet SWAG here. My son just ask me to look at his 3yr old unit. The installer has been back two years in a row to add refrigerant leading my son to think he has a leak in the system when in fact he has a bad compressor pump and the installer has just been adding refrigerant as the pump gets weaker each year trying to get him out of the 5yr warranty time frame. I've only seen this problem about 5 times in 35yrs. I added the correct refrigerant charge and expect the compressor to go out before the end of the cooling season and still being under warranty. Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
