Case 530 Diesel

I am looking at a Case 530 diesel tractor that I might buy? I am told it has a miss and white smoke from the engines exhaust at times? The owner also that its not steam and the tractor doesn't loose coolant? Can anyone shed some light on what the problem might be. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance.
