Easy thing to replace would be the condenser. Check your points if you haven't already. A bad condenser or coil can cause a mag to do real funny things.

Another possibility what is the condition of the air valve in the carburator. If the leather is worn out and not seating it would cause the mixture to run lean and give the symptoms you describe. BTW the air valve is the leather piece that closes the intake, it is spring loaded and automatically opens against the spring to make the mixture.
