I had a similar problem with my MF135 (Z145 Continental engine). I did a complete tune-up including points, Autolite plugs, condensor, wires, cap and rotor. Rebuilt carb and adjusted it per manual after the rebuild. The tractor ran fine when under load, but popped at irregular intervals when idling. After an inspection of the plugs I found out that the carb was still set too rich. After a substantial amount of "fiddling" with the carb, I finally got the air/fuel mixture set correctly, and found out that the carb was way off, much more than I had imagined initially. It's a very touchy adjustment and even a small change makes a huge difference in the way the tractor runs.
