If you were going to change rings, it is not that much more work to take the head off as well and do the job properly and pronto. You don"t say why you think it has eaten the rings, but if they are broken you may well be damaging the engine further. Bits of piston trying to find the way out of the engine can cause havoc, especially if it comes out sideways! Rent a replacment while you do it, it could well be the cheaper option.
