Tail Pipe Trouble

The tail pipe on my MF65 (gas) has broken. A weld on the pipe about a foot past the muffler has come undone, completely. So I am left with two pipes, about an inch and a half, with flat ends. Yesterday I thought I had fixed it with a 1 and a half inch electrical conduit coupling. That sucker got melted by the hot exhaust within five minutes. Any hints from anyone on how to couple this back together without pulling the muffler assembly off the engine, etc? Where the pipe came undone is supoorted underneath, so it's not "loadbearing" - I just need to find a fix that will couple the two pipes together and withstand the heat! Thanks, Doug
