Oil contamination of starter

Recently the starter on my Ford NAA has begun to turn very slowly and generally won't crank the engine. The battery and other electrical components seem O.K. About the same time, my rear main seal began leaking alot of oil from the area of the flywheel and starter. Could oil leaking into the starter cause it to malfunction? If so, could an electrical or brake parts cleaner be used to restore it? By the way, I've fixed the oil leak.
