US oil imports -about 40% of use. Alaskan oil heads to Japan, Asia, etc.- west coast refinery capacity minimal,unable to handle Alaskan crude, more practical to ship to asian refineries instead of transport it to east coast. Cross Canada pipeline to Midwest region being worked on- small diameter pipes currently restrict flow, midwest capacity not much extra, little bit would help but not much. Imports from Mexico, Canada help close to border markets some. S American oil from restless countries sometimes interupted, Nigerian oil (about 5%? of import) also subject to disruption. Iraqi oil tied up in legal issues for purchase- mostly went to Europe anyway. Iran doesn't ship here- political issues and market sense. US refineries restricted by pollution laws, local political issues(See California!). US oil and refinery production just about at maximum existing production now- need some reopened wells and more refinery capacity. One way to cut down bitching- NO refined oil to be shipped to California, they could get heavy sour crude and refine it themselves in state, build clean refinery, change their pollution laws a bit, or walk a lot. Would leave other oil for rest of country and reduce ear pollution from California politicians and irresponsible activists. Check out horses, go Amish! RN.
