Sounds like the right track. You figure the the current is going thru the cable, thru the solinoid, and likely grounding out thru the armature because of bad bearings maybe. Or something like that. I can't see why a auto mechanic can't take a look at it. He might have a hard time to get parts for it. But if the shop is into rebuilds then they should have all the contacts. It should just be a high torque series wound DC motor.
