I have a different mower but had a similar problem.Ran good but lost power when engaging mower.Changed plug;same thing.Checked for fire on plugs(twin cylinder Briggs-overhead-valve).No fire on one cylinder.It was running on one cylinder,but sounded fine.Further checking ,found bad coil(located under flywheel)replaced and it ran fine.There is one coil for each cylinder.If your's is a two cylinder I would check for fire on each plug. hope this helps. ONE THING TO CHECK IF IT IS A SINGLE CYLINDER.SOME DECKS HAVE A SAFETY SWITCH THAT MALFUNCTIONS,CAUSING MOWER TO STALL,WHEN ENGAGING DECK.
