I think most makes are quite good, certainly all the big name ones like Melroe, NH, Case, JD, etc. I'd never go lighter than the 1700 lb. lift models of any make. Skid steers are not pleasant machines to do mechanical work on, as they have most of the components of any vehicle, cramed into a small space. The small ones are worse. Also if you clean out livestock buildings with them, you just can't begin to imagine all the places you will find cow dung.

Also go and try out models with foot and hand controls, see which you are most comfortable with. Personally I like the hand controls, but don't think they are any better than foot controls. It's a personal preference item.
