Scott, Once I was in a bind with a newly acquired trailer (circa 1949) and needed to leave on a Sunday on and 1600 mile trip, I took the seal pieces apart, stacked up several layers of artists/craft felt, (yes the kind your wife and daughter cuts stuff out of) cut it the size of the seal, placed it in the seal and then the seal was assembled, took a pipe a little smaller than the shaft, sharpened it some with a grinder, stood the pipe up on the seal on a steel plate ( so it would cut the felt centers out)and smacked it with a hammer, installed the seal, enjoyed the trip ( worried all the way)I don't use the trailer much now, but it still has that repaired seal and I still have a pair of new seals to install someday in my spare time. moral of the story........... it could be done, select materials to suit yourself, and don't let the experts make you feel small. If it's only axle grease, why the heck not!, If it's gear oil, uh, well , different story..Hey good luck!
