My suggestion would be to start with a good frame with good tires and wheels. These can be had at Auctions or put an ad in your local newspaper. The cost from that point on is still high but if the project is to teach your sons some mechanical stuff it can be fun.Most parts can be purchased on the net.I see Go-Cart frames quite often at local auctions in good shape go for $25-$50.New 5 hp. engine $200 Paint and the rest can add up quick.I have done two in the past,easy to work on lots of fun.
