I would do the routine maintanance things like change air filter, oil change, plugs, wires, dist. cap, check tire pressures.
I would do that because if it did not fix anything I would feel that I did not lose anything being it has to be done sooner or later anyhow. Plugs start going bad after they are put in. Sometimes very hard to see a weak one with an eyeball.
I like the idea that another person suggested about the O-2 sensor. From what I hear, they go bad slowly also and show no definite signs of it.
