to opperate 3pth on 8n

Ijust bought my firstford 8n looking it over last night I realized that the only way that I could make the 3pth to work was to engage the pto lever on the left side of the tractor, is this normal.Makes me wonder how one would operate a post hole digger,or other gear that needs the lift to get to the work before the actual work needs to be done.Also what is the lever on the right side under the seat, when I push it down it makes the hitch arm go down lower then normal.thanks for the help
