Paul, you can get an inexpensive timing light that only uses the "spark energy from the plug wire itself to fire the light." With this type, although it is dim because it does not have auxillary power, it will work with either 12V or 6V based tractors, since the high voltage spark of each type is what fires the strobe anyway. If you do it late in the afternoon or under a shed or in a garage, it will provide enough light at the strobe to see the marks. I got one years ago through JC Whitney, the catalog shipper. If I could find it, it would work. I may have given it away when I got the powered light. RKS
