You can drill a small hole about 1/4 of an inch from the top of your lifter boss. Then you can insert a small screwdriver or anything that will fit into the hole and it will hold the lifter while you adjust it. The lifters have a spiralled groove in the side. I have done this several times and it works very well. Try not to drill a hole any larger than 1/8 of an inch.
