First I will tell you I am not a buff on John Deeres'. I am looking at my history books and it says in 1938 the L was introduced with the Hercules engine (first year production of an L). In 1946 they changed to John Deere engines but were less powerful than the Hercules motor and it became the LA at that time. The LA has rounded sheetmetal over the back of the engine. The L has slotted front wheels & LA is solid rims also LA has a light mounted on the steering shaft support post. Hope these few things will help. As for the bolt holes that could be for anything.
