The easiest way to make that change is to paint the 8N neatly and sell it. Then take the money, add more and buy a more modern tractor with live PTO. The Ford N series were designed for simplicity of construction. As part of that simplicity, the PTO shaft is an extension of the secondary shaft in the transmission. Which means the PTO is not live. But you can use the PTO without moving the tractor by keeping the tractor out of gear. It would be inefficient, but you could mount a hydraulic pump on the front of the engine, then get a hydraulic motor for the PTO driven implement. Probably need the displacement of the motor to be 3.5 to 4 times the pump displacement to get about 540 RPM for the load. You'd need a reservoir, a pressure limit valve, a suction filter, hoses, and probably a control valve or two. Otherwise look for a later Ford or MF or JD or IH with live PTO. They will be more capable tractors also. Gerald
