I"ll speak from what I know. I have used both a MF135 and JD1020. The JD had a loader and backhoe on it whearas the MF did not and I would not have felt comfortable with that much weight on the MF. I would take the 1020 any day over the 135. The JD has true live hydraulics driven from the engine not the transmission (push the PTO clutch in and all the sudden no hydraulic power) and was available with differing size pumps, if the tractor was orginally equipped with a loaded than you should have the higher capacity pump. The JD also have wet hydraulic brakes which are far superior to the mechanical shoe brakes on the MF. The JD diesel engine is very economical to run and reiable and starts reasonably well when cold the MF that I had experience with was a gasser and although reasonably reliable used a lot of gas in my opinion. I have been told that the Perkins desiel is supposedly much better in the MF tractor. After running both all day the JD is much easier on you and much more comfortable to run the petal position and operation on the MF are hard on the knees (at least mine anyways). The last point I will make is that the JD is built much heavier than the MF which if you look real close at it looks more like an update 1939 Ford 9N. I have followed numberous questions like yours and I firmly believe the JD1020 gets overlooked.

Really these are just my opinions and you are the one that has to live with the tractor not me so ..........

Good luck and as far as the not breaking thing goes if you find one of those please let me know.
