My '01 Silverado has the disc brake/drum parking brake set-up for the rear, and I emailed Chevrolet a couple of years ago to complain about the lousy (my opinion) arrangement.
On mine, the left parking brake didn't release for quite some time, because when I went to have an inspection done, I didn't have a parking brake that would hold.
I replaced both rear drums this year, and, so far, the parking brake still works. It appears to be self-adjusting, but I don't think the adjusters are all that reliable.
By the way, Chevrolet was real concerned about my problem---they assigned me a number, said they'd discuss it with the engineers, and let me know. I'm SURE I'll get a response any day now, since it's been over 2 years.....LOL
