The puff of smoke upon acceleration is likely an over rich mixture.
At idle and slow speeds particularly with a cold log style manifold. Droplets of fuel will stick to the side and top of the manifold plus form puddles on the bottom.
When the velocity and mass of the flowing air increases. These droplets of fuel are swept into the combustion chambers causing a momentary over rich situation.
This is one of the reasons why auto manufactures went to port fuel injection/dry intake manifolds.
The engine idle mixture should not be set for the smoothest idle. Rather as lean as the engine will still idle without missing or hunting.
