Have always used the dial type Stewart Warners with the rubber tips on end. You put them in the middle of the shaft and not on the outside of a flywheel. Go to McMaster Carr site and type in tachometers on search and find 5 pages to look at. Item # 1416T1 is they type I was talking about. Can get the electronic ones for more $$ too. If you are going to use one a lot the electronic one would be the way to go. If buying some NOS mechanical ones that have been sitting a long time the bearings inside will be squealing and going out in no time.
