I bought an old 1950’s Towmotor forklift this summer to move stuff around in the barn. I got it running fairly well except I’m getting tired of having to hook the battery charger to it every few days. The charging system is shot in my opinion, as is a lot of the old wiring. It’s currently set up as a 12-volt negative ground but I have no idea if this was original. It has a generator and voltage regulator but I’ve removed both and can’t find a single marking of any sort on either one. Not even any letters on the terminals. I really looked hard too; I can see where the generator tag is missing. It was still all connected so I’m assuming it was a 12-volt generator. The voltage regulator is rusted beyond any hope of working and all the terminals on the generator seem to be shorted out to ground with the wires removed. Given all these problems, I figured I would just put an alternator on it as it looks like the brackets will be easy to adapt and rewire the whole thing in the process. Does this sound like a good idea? If so what should I look for in an alternator and where could I find a wiring diagram. It seems the Delco 10SI are pretty popular. Would one such as the one below on Ebay be what I’m looking for? The wiring should be pretty basic. It does have an ammeter. Do I need to add a resistor to the ignition coil?
