Out of view from the public, most museums have a warehouse full of items. A lot of museums are given items from people in their wills or from families that have lost someone. They feel that the old whatever it is, will be safe with the museum curator when in fact it becomes a storage problem. Some of the larger museums will have sales of "surplus" items every once in a while. Usually they keep the best of what there are two of and sell the rest. It gives them more operating money and keeps their storage space open for items that they may be trying to get hold of. At todays cost of floor space they just cant afford to store a lot of extra items. The money acquired from the sales will sometimes benefit upgrading their exhibits also.
