Take a look at most accidents and tell me how many deaths there are. 218 deaths in 300 crashes really tells me something. You will find people were exceeding the speed rating of those tires and when they wiped out, it was a bad one, your chances of survival get slimmer over 100mph especially when you hit trees and telephone poles. You may also find that those vehicles were driven by high school kids who started damaging them with a burnout and then took off at high speed and that finished them off. There are millions of Cooper tires out there currently in use, I even have them on my pickup. I wouldn't replace my tires just because of that news article as theres a 99.999999 chance nothing is going to happen with the tires you have and you can have any brand of tires and can hit a piece of debris in the road and blow them out anyways. Lesson of the story is don't try racing on tires that were not designed for it.
