On a Ford 9N, the "one-post" generator which has been on it at least as long as I have owned it (since 1990), the generator gets hot, smells like something's burning, starts wisping smoke, and (yes, AND), squealing after about 15 minutes of high speed bushhogging. Just recently noticed it, but it may have been sometime coming since I used it only briefly for wood hauling in the winter. I disassembled the gen. and found one brush loose and put it back in, and a lot of carbony crud which I took compressed air to, hardly really expecting to fix the problem. Is replacement or rebuild the fix (my guess is yes)? If so which one (can one even get parts for rebuilding and is that beyond the pale of the weekend mechanic?). Farm and Country lists rebuilt generators for 100.00+ with trade in, but their catalogue cautions keeping the old pulley, which leads to one more question -- is there a bearing on one end of the pulley only? I thought at first the smoking and smelling might have been from a worn out bearing but suspect more. Still, the presence of only one bearing puzzles me -- I recall that it was at the back end of the generator, where it might be "bearing" less than at the pulley end. Lotsa questions but any help appreciated. Please email directly since I don't get to read this list much. Brian (brb2m@virginia.edu)
