Bought a new CIH 2096 4x4 in fall 1987. It had a hard time for a while in the shed with the others. ( letter series thru 86 series Farmalls). Some nights there was he.. coming from the shed. However, field performance was excellent. That sucker walked side by side a 1086, each pulling identical 720 plows. It started super well for daily winter chores. Come spring it worked side by side on a 22.5 Vibra Shankwith the 1086. Dynoed the tractors same day same dyno; 1086 had 138 HP; 2096 had 134. However, the 2096 with the 5.9 would consistently use 2 CDN. gallons of fuel less per hour as measured by the pump meter. The 2096 had less torque reserve than the 1086. At 1900 RPM grab the powershift down one NOW; whereas the 1086 would hang in to a lower RPM before having to grab the big stick. Also, when engaging the TA, the old 10 would snap back up in revs. In 1998, during the Ice Storm (no electricty for 16 days) I put a cheater shaft on the 2096 to hook up 540 from the 1000 shaft and would go 55 hours on a tank of fuel, Sold in 2003 at 5100 hours with 3 fanbelts and 3 waterpumps as only motor repair. 2096 tractor was a;most original, except tires and batteries and exhaust pipe. Excellent unit, excellent powerplant. QR

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
