They were different engines, but the later Dodge Dakotas four cylinder used the Jeep engine, which was a shortened version of the AMC 232 six which by all accounts was a terrific engine. I had a 258 that seemed to leak a lot though it ran many miles. There was probably a different bellhousing, clutch, starter, motor mounts, and radiator. Probably the computer too. Don't know. I'm pretty sure the 2.5 liter mopar engines were the same, although the pickup might have had the toughened "industrial" parts. The Jeep engine was straight up, but the mopar engine was slanted over. Let us know which one you have now, and what year of Dakota. Mine was a 91 and it still used the Mopar engine. 2005 was last year for AMC designed engines. Dated back to 1940's Nash Ambassador. Don't know what the Wrangler uses now. I think diesel is an option.
