Could be a clogged screen in the gas tank, or the inlet elbow of the carburetor. Could be a plugged gas cap vent. Could be an accumulation of varnish in the fuel line.

You can check for all of these by seeing that you get as good a fuel flow out the float bowl drain plug as you get from the open fuel line.

This intermittant running can also come from a failing ignition coil or condensor in the distributor.
