How long did it sit waiting for the brake job? You say it is a carbureted engine. Well, today's gas sometimes causes the inlet needle valve in the carburetor to gum up and stick closed on a vehicle that has sat fo a week or two, or longer. Sometimes, a sharp "rap" with the plastic handle of a screwdriver near the fuel inlet of the carburetor will free it up, so gas can again get into the carburetor. It's worth a try.
